International Airport - Park & Ride

Last year, Auckland International Airport Ltd (AIAL) opened their new Park & Ride Service. Park & Ride is conveniently located on Verissimo Drive, two kilometres away from the AIAL’s domestic and international terminals.

The project was opened in stages with the first stage opening on the 23 December 2008. Although challenging, the schedule was met allowing the facility to open before the busy holiday break.

Working closely with the head contractor, Ross Reid Ltd, RTL supplied and installed the hardware and signage. This included wheel stops, parking signs and full colour advertising banners some of which spanned over 10 metres.

RTL also provided design and engineering support directly to the engineers and consultants during the development stage of the project. Call your local RTL rep to learn more about the services we provide.

P/ 24 Specification

Performance Based Specification for Traffic Signs (P/24:2008) and Notes was
implemented on the 1st of July 2008 to make changes to the way that road signs are mounted in New Zealand.

This NZTA specification is accompanied by the RSMA document for TrafficSmall sign example
Signs 2008. P/24 brings in a number of changes to sign mounting in New
Zealand and aims to increase the enforcement of these standards.

The major changes include;
  • The definition of a small sign as signs with a panel area less than or equal to 4.7m2 supported on one or two posts and installed less than 500m above sea level.
  • Design life has been extended to 50 for VMS and Overhead signs, 25 years for large road signs and 10 years for small signs ≤4.7m2.
  • Embedment depths for sign supports not specifically designed shall be minimum of 1m with the socket shall be embedded within 100mm of the bottom of the foundation.
  • Regional wind speed factors have been updated to 45m/s for Wellington and Marlborough and 39m/s for all other regions.

The RSMA document is a support document that includes mounting details for small signs that can be considered to be 'specific designs' for the mounting of small signs. If followed then depending on the design then the minimum mounting depth of 1m can be avoided.

Light Arrow System

Light Arrow Systems (LAS) are being introduced by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) as a new requirement for NZTA roads and with a suggestion that this new system should be adopted by all road controlling authorities (RCA's).

Initially LAS are only going to be required for use on Level 3 roads, however they can be used on other level of roads with dispensation from the RCA engineer.

There are a number of advantages to the LAS system over and above the traditional 25 light arrow boards used currently. The retro-reflective nature of the RG17/34 on the lower panel directs the reflection of vehicles headlights back to the driver in a way that ensures that their attention is gained. Also, the two part construction of the LAS allows the light arrow on the upper section to be lifted higher than 25 light arrow boards have traditional been mounted which allows the combination to be seen from greater distances and over traffic. Finally, this upper section also allows the Xenon lights to add a third dimension to gain the drivers attention.

Specific advantages of the RTL Light Arrow System are that the frame is bolted and riveted rather than welded which makes repairs easier if the unit sustains an impact. Also, the upper panel is solid aluminium whereas other models have a hole in them. This hole can allow light from external sources behind the unit to affect the visibility of the light arrow and cause confusion for motorists. The RTL Light Arrow System also features Class 1 reflective sheeting for the most effective retro-reflective performance as required by the standard. For further information about the Light Arrow System please contact RTL customer services or your Territory Manager.
