Community Initiative: 'Slow Down My Whanau Works Here' Signs Make Roads Safer

In a bid to enhance road safety and raise awareness about the importance of driving cautiously in work zones, a grassroots initiative has gained momentum again with the introduction of "Slow Down My Whanau Works Here" signs. Inspired by similar endeavors shared on Traffic Management Facebook groups, this movement aims to personalize the message of caution for drivers passing through road works. We last saw these signs back in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.

The striking pink signs, bearing the message "Please slow down my whanau works here," stand out conspicuously from the usual orange temporary signs typically seen around roadworks. What sets these signs apart is not just their vibrant color but the personal touch they convey. It’s pleading the message to slow down!

These signs serve as a reminder that behind every road works site, there are real people – someone's whanau – working diligently to improve our roads. The hope is that by invoking a sense of connection and shared responsibility, drivers will be more inclined to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution in work zones.

With road safety being a shared responsibility, initiatives like these serve as a emotional reminder that every driver has the power to make a difference by simply slowing down and driving with care, particularly when passing through work zones where someone's whanau is hard at work.

RTL has listened to the call for action and we are offering these signs at a flat rate to all customers.
