What are 3 things you do to look after your health?

Regular check ups and therapy-  In short don’t be afraid of the doctor. Build a relationship with your trusted doctor and use their expertise. You know your own body and your feelings, if something feels off get checked. Try therapy, psychotherapists are a great tool to use, they provide a listening ear and guidance. They are not there to answer everything for you but will give you tips on how to find these answers for yourself from within.

Exercise- Do active things you enjoy. For me its getting out in the bush or being out on my mountain bike. Heaps of fresh air and a little sweat is good for you.

Make an effort to relax- Take time out to focus on nothing in particular and try to “empty the brain”. Stress is something we all have to live with and the time you can take without any stress is golden. I have found using things like float tanks and meditation work for me. You can easily access apps that teach you breathing exercises and how to meditate, use them.

What would you say to a young man who is struggling with their mental health?

If you are a young man struggling with your mental health, it is very important to remember that first of all you are not alone and that seeking help is a sign of strength and not a sign of weakness. Remember everyone’s journey is unique and healing takes time. You deserve support and understanding. Reach out, take small steps and know that with the right help and a bit of effort it is possible to overcome mental health challenges and live an epic life.

Here are a few tips I have used myself and would happily hand on to anyone struggling.

Speak up- Remember it is ok to not be ok. A lot of men get caught up in toxic masculinity and feel shame for speaking up or that it makes you “weak”, in practice it is the opposite so find someone you trust and be open about how you are feeling.

Prioritize self care- Take time out to do things that promote your mental wellbeing. Engage in activities you enjoy, find hobbies, exercise, spend time in nature, practice mindfulness or meditation or pursue creative outlets. Remember to prioritize rest and proper nutrition as they contribute to overall wellbeing.

Practice self compassion-  BE KIND TO YOURSELF. Acknowledge that struggling with mental health is a valid experience and it is essential that you take it easy on yourself and be patient. Avoid self-judgement and practice self care without feeling guilty. You don’t owe anything to anyone but you owe everything to yourself.

Educate yourself-  Learn about mental health and the specific challenges you might be facing. Getting an understanding of what you are going through can help you gain perspective and develop coping strategies. There are so many resources you can use for this, books and support groups can provide valuable information and insights.

“Eat the elephant” -  Don’t forget that healing and change takes time. Focus on little bites until you have feasted upon the challenge.

What do you do to engage with other men?

Sport has always been a massive part of my life and has always helped me to engage with men of all ages. Attend social events, put yourself out there and surround yourself with other successful men.

Support the Wahs!  Good group of guys that know how to support each other through tough times and to celebrate the wins 😉
