Reflection: A Matariki Conversation with Naomi Chewlit
As Matariki 2025 rises in our skies, RTL is proud to present a series of conversations with team members about reflection, gratitude, and looking forward. Today, we speak with Naomi Chewlit, who brings a unique perspective as a wahine of both Samoan and Māori heritage.
When asked about what stands out from her past year, Naomi points to an experience that came from outside her usual professional sphere.
“The NZCB Conference I recently attended really stands out,” she shares. “Although it was about a different industry, the themes of growth, resilience, and adaptability really resonated with me and felt highly relevant to my own journey. It gave me a fresh perspective on my professional journey and inspired a mindset shift around how I navigate challenges and opportunities.”
Naomi’s mixed Samoan and Māori heritage offers her a rich cultural foundation, particularly during significant cultural moments like Matariki.
“It deepens my connection to both sides of my heritage,” Naomi explains. “It’s also encouraged me to create my own traditions to acknowledge and honour this special and meaningful time.”As with many across Aotearoa, Matariki provides Naomi with an opportunity to practice gratitude and set intentions for the coming year.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to pause, reflect, and reset,” she says. “I feel more connected to the Māori lunar calendar than the traditional one. Right now, I’m setting new goals - restarting my fitness journey, focusing on career growth, and reaffirming my commitment to my whānau.”
I also feel privileged that my mahi at RTL allows me to support the Northland region in a meaningful way. My connection to Northland runs deep—not only do I whakapapa there, but I also have the opportunity to work alongside dedicated customers who value tradition and embrace te reo Māori. Being able to connect my professional work with my cultural identity has been an absolute privilege.
When considering her goals for the year to come, Naomi has clear priorities.
“To stay committed to my health and fitness journey, continue developing professionally, and be more intentional with my time—especially when it comes to my family and friends.”In keeping with this year’s theme “Matariki mā Puanga: Celebrating Together,” Naomi’s plans focus on connection and community. “Spending quality time with loved ones. The weekend will be all about good kai and relaxing with the people who matter most.”
This interview is part of RTL’s Matariki 2025 series, highlighting the diverse ways our team members connect with and celebrate this significant time in the Māori calendar.
