Road Safety Interview: Sealing Season Awareness with T8 Traffic

Road sealing season in 2025 is in full swing across Aotearoa, presenting unique safety considerations for both Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) workers and motorists.

We recently chatted with Levi, General Manager T8 Traffic, to gain valuable insights from T8's vast experience with sealing operations throughout the country.

Interview with Levi Anderson-Crewther - GM - T8 Group

What are the most significant hazards that TTM workers face specifically during sealing operations that may not be present in other roadwork scenarios? Flying chip is a big one, when traffic isn’t following the TSL (temporary speed limit) it can flick up at high speed and can cause cuts

How has T8 improved protection measures for TTM staff working on sealing projects over recent years? We have full cover PPE, safety glasses are non-negotiable

What driver behaviors do you believe pose the greatest risk to TTM workers during sealing season, and how could the public better support worker safety? Definitely speed, drivers assume it's just another roadworks site until they hit the loose chip going too fast and then struggle to maintain control of their vehicle

What safety tips would you prioritise for drivers encountering sealing works?  Slow down, the less chip that flicks up, the less bitumen will get stuck to your car

How can drivers best protect both their vehicles  during sealing season?  Follow the TSL, follow vehicle in front no less than 2 car lengths

What surprising behind-the-scenes fact about road sealing might give drivers a new appreciation for the work? Seal Care is the phase after the physical work is done and the stones need to bed into the road, this is critically important for making sure everything sets correctly and greatly affects the life of the seal.

What simple actions by motorists make the biggest difference to TTM crew safety during sealing operations? Slow down, take your time and leave plenty of space between you and the car in front.

This article is designed to help educate the public about navigating sealing works safely, so we thank Levi and T8 for sharing some first hand insights, especially from a Northland perspective. How are you preparing for sealing season? Reach out and tell us about it
