RTL Manufacture 19 Metre Mountain Road Sign
In 2024, RTL manufactured the new overhead large sign on the mountain road over bridge on the Auckland Southern Motorway. The size of the sign is impressive. It covers five lanes and is 19.2 metres wide x 4.2 metres high. It's one of the largest signs in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Mountain Road Sign project was a massive team effort, where we created one of the largest signs in Aotearoa. Several of us have been making signs for over two decades and joined our skills together to make this happen. Two of our most experienced sign makers; Les and Jonny Laulu were responsible for the sign making and applying vinyl to all 20 panels. Our Guillotine and CNC Operators handled the metal work, including the support channels. Sini, another sign maker, prepared all the reflective materials, while Helen and Marty took care of the vinyl printing. Sam from our projects team coordinated with the customer to keep everything on track, and David Southgate was our expert for sign design and engineering. It was a big job with many moving parts, but everyone on our team worked together to create something amazing.
We took the time to interview Jonny.
Meet Jonathan ‘ Jonny’ Laulu – Experienced Sign Maker at RTL for over 25 years!
What do you do?
I am Jonathan “Jonny” Laulu. I am a sign maker at RTL based in our Auckland branch on Maurice road. I have been making all types of signs for over 25years and have seen a lot changes over the years
What do I love about it?
I love the variety of my role and the culture in our team. Some of my colleagues have also been here for 25years and are we are all very passionate about road signs. Every day is something different in this industry. We make everything from small temporary signs to large ones that you see all over Aotearoa. We even work on cool stuff like electronic signs, prism signs and attenuators. We have a vibe here which is inspiring!
Why is it important?
I am really proud of what I do at RTL. It feels great knowing that the signs we make help keep people safe on the roads. We've worked on some big complex projects over the years. The Waterview Tunnel in particular was a great achievement for our team.
