Ver-Mac VMS Trailer Communication Update: VPN to Static IP Changeover

Action Required: Check Your VMS Modem Type

Dear Valued Customer,
At RTL, we’re committed to ensuring the reliability and performance of your traffic management equipment. We’re implementing an important update to the communication system for Ver-Mac VMS trailers that requires your attention. This transition will take place in two phases and has been designed to enhance your operational experience. Phase One - Embedded Modems | Phase Two: External Modems.

What’s Changing:
VERMAC in Canada is transitioning away from the Virtual Private Network (VPN) setup currently used for Ver-Mac VMS trailers in New Zealand.   After successful testing with key customers, we’re confident this change will provide you with:

  • Improved connectivity and reliability
  • Fewer communication timeouts
  • Faster response times
  • More stable long-term solution

Why This Change is Necessary
The VPN system was originally created as a temporary solution for customers without access to public static IPs. Today, most customers have transitioned to either public static IPs or Ver-Mac’s data plan, with New Zealand being the only remaining region using the VPN setup.
Our local testing with two key customers has demonstrated significantly better connectivity and fewer timeouts with the new solution.

Step 1: Identify whether your Ver-Mac trailer has an embedded modem or an external modem. The roll out will be done in two stages.

PHASE ONE - EMBEDDED MODEMS ONLY (V1 & V2)

If you have an embedded modem, please follow these steps:

  1. Purchase a public static IP data SIM card (we recommend 2 Degrees based on our testing)
  2. Ensure you select a minimum 50MB monthly data plan per trailer
  3. Follow the Instructions in the downloadable User Guide to update your modem
  4. Contact our support team services@rtl.co.nz to verify connectivity

Stage Two - External Modems (Coming Soon)

External modems will be updated within the next two months.  The upgrade process will be different to the embedded modems. We’ll provide detailed instructions in a follow-up communication specifically addressing external modem requirements.
