RTL Buzzes with Excitement: Bringing Pollinators back to Penrose

At RTL, we are literally buzzing about the launch of our latest sustainability initiative – a dedicated bee garden at our 31 Maurice Road location in Penrose. This week, our team kicked off the project with an inspiring consultation meeting with Grant Mouldey from Kelmarna Community Farm , whose expertise in urban gardening and pollinator habitats has provided us with valuable guidance.

The 6x3 meter space at the edge of our carpark will soon transform into a vibrant haven for bees and other pollinators, featuring Mediterranean herbs, native plants, and perennials specifically selected to thrive in our local conditions while supporting biodiversity.

“Pollinators play a crucial role in our ecosystem, yet urban environments often lack the necessary habitats to support them,” says Sue, from our Sustainability Team  “This garden represents our commitment to creating positive environmental impact right where we work.”

As part of our commitment to SDG Goal 13 (Climate Action), this environmental regeneration project contributes to our broader emissions reduction strategy by creating carbon-capturing green space and demonstrating how businesses can integrate nature-based solutions into their operations. The project holds special significance for many RTL team members who share a passion for gardening and plant care. Their enthusiasm has been instrumental in bringing this initiative from concept to reality, with many already volunteering for the preparation and planting phases scheduled through winter and into spring.

Sustainability in Challenging Times
Despite the current economic challenges, RTL remains committed to our environmental initiatives. We asked Sue what it’s like  pursuing sustainability projects during an economic downturn,

“Projects like our bee garden actually shine even brighter when times get tough”. “We are not breaking the bank here, but what we get back is huge – happier teams, real environmental wins,  and it shows everyone what RTL is really about. It’s a no-brainer, really!”

With a relatively small financial investment, we are creating:

  • Increased team engagement and wellbeing through meaningful, collaborative work
  • Enhanced company culture by rallying around shared values
  • Tangible environmental benefits that support our sustainability goals
  • Visual demonstration of our commitment to community and environmental stewardship
  • Skills development opportunities across our team

“We’ve found that these projects actually strengthen team cohesion during challenging periods,” “When team members connect with nature and each other through initiatives they care about, it builds resilience and positive energy that carries into all aspects of our work.”

The garden’s development will follow a carefully staged plan, beginning with winter preparation of the site and culminating in spring planting of pollinator-friendly species. We are also aiming to incorporate educational elements that will help our team and visitors understand the importance of bees to our food systems and environment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all team members who have already rolled up their sleeves to get involved. Stay tuned for more updates as our garden and other green initiatives take root at RTL!
