RTL’s Sustainability Journey: Driving Change Through SDG Commitment

At RTL, we know that a sustainable future requires deliberate action today. Our sustainability strategy is built around five key UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that align with our core business and where we can make the most significant impact. This three-year plan establishes a roadmap for transforming our operations, products, and partnerships to contribute meaningfully to global sustainability challenges.

Our Five SDG Focus Areas

Emissions & Energy (SDG 13: Climate Action)

Emissions & Energy (SDG 13: Climate Action)
We are committed to measuring and reducing our emissions in line with climate science. In this first year, we are currently developing a comprehensive carbon reduction plan and establishing annual carbon reporting protocols. By 2026, we will announce specific carbon reduction targets based on our baseline measurements, ensuring our goals are both ambitious and achievable.

Waste & Circularity (SDG 8 & SDG 12)

Waste & Circularity (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)
We are transforming how we think about product lifecycles. Our flagship initiative is the 2:1 Cone Recycling programme, which diverts cones to landfill and utilises them into road cone manufacture – this is coming soon – Target Date August 2025. By 2026, we also aim to establish a Road Sign Working Group to investigate and implement circular solutions for the road signs we sell, further reducing waste and resource consumption.

Customer Benefits
Our sustainability initiatives, particularly in Emissions & Energy and Waste & Circularity, directly benefit our customers by:

  • Enabling RTL customers to meet their own sustainability goals through partnership with us
  • Providing products with reduced environmental footprints
  • Offering transparent environmental impact data for procurement decisions
  • Creating innovative solutions that address both sustainability challenges and business needs

Education & Collaboration (SDG 12)

Education & Collaboration (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)
We are fostering strategic partnerships within the road transport industry to drive innovation toward a circular, decarbonised sector.

Navigating Sustainability in Challenging Times
Investing in sustainability during economic hardship may seem counterintuitive, but we view it as essential risk management. Our approach focuses on:

  1. Prioritising initiatives with dual benefits: We focus first on projects that both reduce environmental impact and deliver cost savings, such as energy efficiency improvements and waste reduction.
  2. Phased implementation: Our three-year plan allows for strategic timing of investments, with initial focus on measurement and planning before larger capital expenditures.
  3. Leveraging partnerships: By collaborating with industry partners, we can share resources and knowledge to achieve greater impact at lower individual cost.
  4. Future-proofing our business: Meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations now prevents costly compliance issues later
