Cultural Marae Signs
The Cultural Marae Signs, with their distinct red oche (kokowai) background, are located near the main entrance of the marae or used as directional signage on the approach to the Marae (direction arrow or distance to marae). The Signs, specific to Aotearoa, are 750mm wide x 1000mm high. Standard NZTA design is non-reflective with five different background options and wording that can be adjusted to suit.
Marae Signs - Background Options:
- No motif (Plain Background)
- Nihotaniwha motif - large triangles representing dragon's teeth (Taniko design)
- Harakeke flax weave motif - A type of flax (Phormiumtenax) commonly used for weaving
- Poutama motif - Tukutuku design, referring to education, progress and ascension
- Patiki motif - diamond pattern representing flounder
Please note, Cultural Marae Signs are not specified in the Traffic Control Devices (TCD). Other Maori-English Bilingual Signage include the standard yellow WU1M Marae Pedestrian Warning Signs (see related items).
