Slow Down My Whanau Works Here Signs Continue Having a Positive Impact
Road Worker safety continues to be a critical priority for our industry, and we are proud to see the ongoing use of the "Slow Down My Whanau Works Here" signs continuing to make an impact.
This grassroots movement, which first appeared during the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, has seen a resurgence in recent years, and we were happy to join the movement by adding a 750mm size to our suite of signage in April 2024. The signs have since grown in popularity due to their effective messaging and have since added a smaller cone mounted version and non reflective option, perfect for the office.
RTL support for industry led safety innovation
At RTL we decided to refine the offering to suit several applications - there are now three different options – a 750mm MKL Sign for temporary warning sign, a 450mm reflective with a Cone Strap for the yard, and a 400mm non reflective panel only sign, perfect for a giveaway or putting up in the office or workshop. All three options can have personalised wording –Mum, Dad, Whanau etc (with a macron of course).
Why do they work so well? Because of the Personal Approach to Work Zone Safety
The vibrant pink signs create an immediate visual distinction from standard orange temporary signage. What makes these signs particularly effective is the unique messaging—they establish a human connection between drivers and the road workers.
The signs a powerful reminder that real people—family members, parents, siblings, and friends—are working diligently behind every road works site to improve our infrastructure.
By invoking this personal connection, the signs encourage drivers to:
- Adhere strictly to posted speed limits
- Maintain heightened awareness when passing through work zones
- Recognise their shared responsibility in keeping road workers safe
